Kevin was a taker, not a giver. He lived to consume, yet contribute nothing. For the poor soul who loved Kevin, he brought only drama and misery. Kevin’s mission in life was to be a bad example. Needless to say, Kevin was a frequent flyer with law enforcement.
Not surprisingly, a domestic violence call involving Kevin came over the radio and I was close. I heard yelling inside his girlfriend’s mobile home. My backup had not yet arrived but I went in anyway. I saw Kevin screaming at his girlfriend and her mom. What I didn’t see, however, was the pistol.
The mom shouted, “He’s got a gun!” So, I drew and pointed a .357 mag at Kevin. I shouted commands but he refused to drop his gun. Seconds before Kevin was dispatched to the gates of Hell, Mom jumped forward and snatched the gun from Kevin’s hand.
That lady risked her life to save Kevin’s (And possibly mine). Why she risked so much for someone who deserved so little is a lesson in Christlike love. God says, “I take no pleasure in the death of wicked people. I only want them to turn from their wicked ways so they can live.” (Ezekiel 33:11) Even Kevin.
The Bible also says “There is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away!” (Luke 25:7) God loves unloveable people. Even Kevin.
Finally, CS Lewis said, “He died not for men, but for each man. If each man had been the only man made, He would have done no less.” Even Kevin…
“This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners’“ (Paul’s letter to Timothy 1:15)
